The changing face of kids’ rooms

We all used to expect girls’ rooms to be decorated in pink and boys with footballing wallpaper on the walls. Now, though, these stereotypes aren’t really conformed to. Parents and children have got a lot more creative over the years, and the choices available to them have multiplied.

As well as the colours and patterns used on the walls, the furniture has changed a lot too. There are some incredible bed and desk combinations available today, maximising the space available in a room to make it a space that children can not only sleep in, but also do their homework there and use it as a place to entertain their friends. Many kids not only have computers in their room, they also watch TV in there as well, so a sofa can be a really cool addition to any young person’s room.

Not every bedroom has room for a sofa though, so you might want to get them one of those recliner chairs that have become so popular recently.

If you’re thinking about redecorating and buying new furniture for your children’s rooms, it’s a good idea to get them involved in the planning. Of course, you can always have the power of veto if their taste doesn’t quite tally with yours. It doesn’t hurt for them to be aware of the costs involved too – you want them to appreciate what’s going into their new look bedroom so that they treat it nicely.

Many of the furniture retailers now offer flexible finance packages, so you can buy an interest free sofa, bed or other piece of furniture and spread the payments over a year or longer if you want to.

It can be fun to spend a weekend doing the decorating with your child, so that they really feel ownership of their new room and you’ll have plenty of time to chat while you’re doing it, too.
